What is a custom domain?

A domain name is the address of a website that people type into their browsers’ URL bars to visit a website. If your website was a house and your domain name was its address, then your website would be located at your domain name.

Each computer is assigned an IP (Internet Protocol) address. A unique number sequence that identifies a particular computer on the internet. A typical IP address usually looks like this:

66.249.66.1

It’s not easy to remember an IP address like this. If you had to use such large numbers to visit your favorite sites, you’d probably be less likely to go online.

Domain names were invented so that people could easily remember websites’ addresses.

If you want to visit a web page, then you don’t need to enter a long sequence of numbers. Instead, you can go there by typing an easy to recall URL into your web browser’s address field.

Where to get custom domains?

Today, there are many third-party domain registrars available in the market. For starters, you can use simple website builder tools, such as GoDaddy or Namecheap. It’s important to know that custom domains easily get taken, so it might be difficult to get a domain that you desire. If your desired name has already been taken, you may want to consider one of these alternatives. If you want to buy the domain name, you could try to buy it from the current owner. If you want to spend hundreds (or millions) of dollars, consider another approach.

If “.com” is taken, then consider using other well-known extensions like.net or.org. You could start over and try different variants with.com.
